My Teaching Philosophy
My philosophy is constantly evolving as I grow as a educator and learner. I take tidbits from other educators that I admire and try to add them to my toolbox. I do not claim to know everything, nor do I have all of the answers. I believe the children are our future…each and every child has the potential to learn in their own unique, special and specific learning style. All children are capable individuals who can and want to learn about life. I continue to learn, along with my students, and I try to remain open-minded, and willing to grow in my beliefs and practices as a educator and designer.
If I had to summarize my philosophy in education in one sentence, it would be a variation on the Golden Rule:
Teach and treat my students as I would like to be taught and treated.
I have taught in a variety classrooms, in various states and in various teaching positions. I have taught students as young as six months and as old as 78 years old. I have been a great teacher, a mentor to other teacher, and I have been severely lacking, in need of help, as a teacher at times. The point is that I have grown and leaned in both extremes and in the in-between.
I believe exceptional classroom management skills are the foundation for a productive learning environment. When expectations and procedures are clear and consistent, learning can take place. I believe in building a sense of community both in the classroom and with families by promoting positive relationships among students, teachers and parents or guardians. Students must feel they are in a safe, fair, and comfortable environment where they can equally contribute by sharing and gaining knowledge. I believe all students are capable of learning. My constant goal as an educator is to ensure every student reaches his or her full academic potential. Differentiated instruction will be provided to accommodate all learning styles, abilities, and interests. I believe in using variety of alternate assessments and will provide individual feedback. I utilize technology in order to promote the various learning styles and level the environment so that all my students can learn. I utilized differentiation strategies in my course designs and professional development. so everyone can learn. I promote an active learning environment, utilizing the universal learning design, where students will be encouraged to interpret, analyze, and predict information in ways that are unique to them. I try to develop a classroom environment where every student feels welcomed and respected, not just by me, but by the other students as well. As an educator, I will take advantage of every tool and each unique opportunity to teach beyond the mandated standards.
Based on my experiences as an educator, there are certain characteristics I know that are essential to being a successful educator. These characteristics include (in no particular order): Respectful, Empathetic, Humorous, Prepared, and Kind. I believe if I can succeed on these traits, they form a strong foundation for other characteristics that form a strong character. As the saying goes, “No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care.”
In summary, I try to take a holistic view of the teaching and learning process. We are becoming a global society and tolerance, respect and knowledge of one another's culture is of the utmost importance. Technology has enabled me to use a variety of tools, methods and strategies, to not only help students with the course content but with their personal growth as well, leading to better outcomes both in the short-term and long-term.

1) “Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher
is most important.” - Bill Gates
2) “There can be infinite uses of the computer and of new age technology, but if teachers themselves are not
able to bring it into the classroom and make it work, then it fails.” - Nancy Kassebaum
3) “Any teacher that can be replaced with a computer, deserves to be.” - David Thornburgh
Technology is constantly evolving in this world and bringing people closer together. As a result. people need to learn how to work with other, understand one another's culture and bring it all together. Technology is not a toy, an add in or something of a center, it is a tool used to motivate, engage and help level the playing field of the curriculum. This will help make the curriculum more accessible to the students.
